The Perfect Shirt, Favorite Pair of Jeans

Everyone has that favorite shirt,
that shirt you find at some random store.
It's perfect for you.
The colors match your eyes, the style is just right.
So you wear the shirt all the time,
straight out of the wash.
It stretches in places, rips in others,
but you can't seem to give it up.
The colors start fading through so many washes,
and soon the shirt doesn't fit anymore.
Reluctantly, after years of wearing it,
you finally give it up.
Sometimes you still think about it,
sometimes you look through your dresser for it,
but eventually you find a new favorite shirt,
and it finishes its journey trapped in your memory,
or perhaps even forgotten.

---

I used to have this pair of jeans,
the perfect pair for me.
They were made of cotton and stretched to fit,
dark, very stylish.
I couldn't stop wearing them,
it was hard to wear anything else.
I abandoned the rest of my wardrobe,
focusing all my upcoming outfits on them.
After years of wear and tare,
they faded and ripped.
They were growing too short for me,
and I began to despise them.
I still loved them, how could I not,
with all the joyous memories they brought me.
I sold them at our next garage sale,
reluctant to see them go,
but glad to move on.
I found a new pair of jeans to favor,
and life went on, as it always does.

---

When we first started dating,
when your hand first touched mine,
the stars aligned, and everything was a perfect fit.
I fell in love with you,
couldn't imagine my life without you.
I spent most of my time with you,
forgot anything important.
As time went on, things weren't quite right.
We began to fade, a misfit pair.
I couldn't fathom it ending, though
so I held on until I couldn't anymore.
Reluctantly, I had to let you go.
I know as with everything else,
I will eventually move on, and you,
you'll become just another memory
in my long list of favorites.

Shy

Before my eyes caught sight of him,
I could sense he was there.
A tingling ran through me, down my back.
A light blush through my cheeks and ears.
I turned around and there he was,
just as I expected he would be.
I had to look up to see his face,
if only I had the courage.
He laughed, and I reddened.
I made some silly excuse to leave,
and as usual, ran off with my insecurities.

The Snow

Fluffy white individuals find their way to the ground,
dancing in circles,
covering the earth with their wetness.

The slush creates panic and accident,
the streets are bare and cold;
the snowflakes continue on.

Each one tells a story, a different path and pattern
though from a distance
they all look the same.

Different reactions are created from snow,
snow delays, excitement,
freezing cold, shoveling, and driving.

So forgetting their woes, the happy take advantage
sledding, flying down the hill.
Snowballs, snowfights, and snowmen, smiling.

Don't Reach for the Stars

I was right in front of the golden star.
Finally I was about to touch
pure perfection.
As I approached, it flew away.
I spent my whole life reaching for the stars,
Put all my effort into being the best.
The best at being the best.
Yet, when I finally achieved everything
when I was finally there,
the star ran.
My struggles were for nothing,
the pain, the triumphs, the hope.
All for nothing.
Some star.
Maybe I'll try reaching for something a little
closer to home.

Today hurts.
It hurts, and I can't hold back anymore.
My heart saw everyone,
their love was so innocent and pure.
Their New Year's kiss- perfect.
And I could do nothing.
How am I supposed to move on,
when everyone keeps reminding me
of how happy I used to be?

Time to be the best

We spend our whole lives searching
to be the best, the strongest,
to understand our purpose.
Different skills, abilities, and strengths
lead us to the end
with success and happiness.

Everyone wants to get there faster,
be the best- the fastest.
Time is the most important,
it's a race to the top of the hill.
Climb the ladder, one step at a time,
jump a few steps to win.

But you miss out on the importance in life.
You have to see the world,
take time to take it all in.
It's a huge world out there,
so much to learn and so much to gain.
Take life one step at a time,
take it inch by inch.
To gain the skills to be number one,
you've got to slow down and learn
master and reflect.

You can be the best that you can be,
if you just take your time.

Far Away to Happiness

When the world is full of sunlight,
how can I possibly ignore the radiant happiness?
But then,
how can I ignore the pain, anger, and sorrow?
Happiness means so much,
but requires so much to obtain it.
It requires being stronger than the past and the memories
it requires ignoring previous happiness,
ignoring the reasons everything went wrong.
It requires remaking yourself,
starting again,
beginning a new life.
I can't think back to when everything was perfect,
I'll remember how far away that is.
I can only think of now,
here with what's left of me.

Black on Barbed Wire

Little black feet pace along

the barbed wire fence.

The only thing scarier than death

is the crack of a whip.

Stepping between the pointed edges,

Swiftly, cautiously running;

The thin wire shakes under his weight;

he pushes on.

The sweat running down his back

burning his sores,

streaming between old and new cuts;

a New Life awaits.

Dreams begin to become a reality.

But the fence, with the barbed wire

stretches outward indefinitely.

The little black feet tire,

and become clumsy on the thin wire.

Shaking, he cries for help,

silently he misses a step

and falls toward despair.

Poetic Song (without music)

Empty Water Bottle

My song starts in two minutes,
and my throat is burning.
You know, that tingling feeling you feel
when your throat starts its yearning.
I search the dressing room,
below my mirror and the closet top.
I found my bottle of water,
But to my dismay, there wasn't a drop.
And I have to sing in two minutes,
and my throat is as dry as sand.
I need a water fountain,
or I won't be able to stand.
So I search the darkened hallways,
and I finally find a bathroom sink.
I sigh with relief, turn the faucet on
only to see the water was PINK! Ugh
Now with less than a minute to go,
and no water for my throat,
I know there's no turning back now,
I have to hit every single note!
While my throat is dry,
when no sound wants to come out,
I'll get on that stage, give them everything!
Belting and belting and attempting to shout!
I walk up to the curtain,
thirty seconds to go.
My manager quickly hands me a glad,
and wishes me luck for my show.

:D

So I found this on drafts, so I'll post it.

I was going through my drafts, and this was there. So I'll post it. haha. Original date: March 6, 2009. Today's Date: June 5, 2009

The birds chirp a happy love song,
while the trees wave around dancing.
The couple holds hands beneath the tree,
passing suggestive glances in their eyes.
Cars drive by, people rush past,
but these two know that days like these,
they only come every once in a while.
The breeze brushes her skirt against his bare legs,
and that's all they need to let their desire
Take over.

Stuck (inspired by Kristin)

The floor beneath begins to shake
and I am left to choose.
The door on my right is painted pink.
The hallway leading there is wide.
Drawings of kittens and stick figures.
The door on my left is painted gold.
A thin hallway leads to the sparkling
glimmer of hope, beyond the threshold.
If I stay in between I will fall,
failing to reach any sort of goal.
Eventually I know I will have to choose-
The first door leads to my childhood,
the second to the future.
The floor beneath breaks.
I run to the door closest to me.

The melody of midnight escapades.

Ignoring and not caring, I sing my way to class.
Drumming with two pencils on my desk.
After class, it's off to the CPA to practice.
Major scales on flute, minor on piano.
Marceau de Concour perfected by Thursday.
It's not like I'm a music major-
But I can't help but embrace the joy,
The expressive happiness of music.
I'll grab a sheet of blank score,
Start in 6/8, Ab minor.
The violins have the melody, but clarinet takes the stage
As it solos its way through the piece.
I can't seem to get the piano quite right,
I ask for some help from a composition master.
His name is Steve, he instantly begins
Chords and arpeggios and God knows what.
The piece is now complete.
Staring at Steve, I realize he's always known.
He's always completed my life, right where I have failed.
We use alcohol as our way of celebrating
As we make love by the swan pond,
Crickets chirping in the background, water dazzling around us.
The air swiftly singing our lullaby.

Fated Love

How could two of the most random people fall in love?
Is it fate?
Are we controlled by actions already planned out for us?
Otherwise, how could we have met,
how could we have coincidentally been into many of the same things?
But I try not to believe in fate.
I like to control my life, my thoughts, my actions.
But something tells me God meant for you to be with me.
You are the one,
If there is such thing.
And it's funny, because our lives are leading us in different places.
So if fate does exist, what is its plan for us?
To love no matter the distance?
I'm not sure. I mean, I would do that anyways.
With or without fate.
But there's something telling me that you were planned into my life,
Long before I believed in love and happy endings.
Long before I knew you.
Like even though fate doesn't really exist,
We were meant to be.
Does that even make sense? Can that even happen?
Where would we be if you hadn't fallen in love with me?
Who would we be if I never let you walk me to class?
Was there even a choice?
I bet you knew all along,
this fate thing would pull us together.
You were just waiting for me to realize it, too.

Falling In Love

It was only yesterday that you didn't mean anything to me.
At least it seems that way.
But four years ago you took the challenge
and finally you won.
You broke my hard core that pushed everything away.
You got to me.
No one has ever tried as hard as you to show me love.
No one else has ever loved me as hard.
And now, I'm completely head over heels.
I love you more than Juliet loved Romeo,
More than Peter Pan did Wendy,
Belle and the Beast, and all other princess stories.
I love you.
It seems so easy to say. But it isn't easy to feel.
It took you and me a while before I was okay.
You've taught me so much through this.
And I am forever indebted to you.
Which is okay by me because I want to be with you.
Forever.
And nothing,
not a person, not the distance between us, not anything,
can take that away from us- me.
If I didn't have you in my life,
I honestly cannot think of what my life would possibly be.
I am a better person because of you.
I see the stars brighter in the sky,
I hear a heartbeat louder.
Smell, touch, taste.
All senses are enhanced, because they have to be.
In love, I finally feel alive.

When love speaks

I tell myself
Lies
because I fear
Truth,
Love,
Trust.
but I can't hide
forever.
One day you'll catch up
and I'll just have to be ready.
Just not yet.

Jealousy.

I hear two people talking.
A strong boy, a young girl.
They talk about love, marriage, and life.
They hold hands, smile, and kiss.
Even though the world knows it won't happen,
they don't let it stop them.
One day they'll break up,
their plans will never be true.

And then there's us.
Forever and ever, until the end of time.
And yet, we don't discuss any of it.
Are we scared of the future?
To always be together?
Are you just waiting for someone better to come along?
I get jealous of those other couples,
the ones that won't last,
because at least they get to talk about
what they feel in their hearts.

Dancing.

Everytime I try to start a poem,
the first word that comes to me is-
Dancing.
Maybe there's something hiding,
deep inside my subconscious,
telling me that I want to dance.
What is it about dancing that strikes me?

The freedom-
The motion.
The art.
Expression, shape, form.
The love.

It's the first action I can think of to describe
everything I want to describe.
I spent my younger years in the studio,
ballet shoes and gym mats.
The agonizing pain.
The great success.
The final product of happiness.

Fighting the Battle for Love

Giggling stops.
You're smiling.
Unwaivering embrace.
That's when you know,
You've made the right decision.
Everyone stares-
Snickers, teases, misunderstands,
You don't care.
That's when you know.
Joy conquers fear.
Happiness first.
Not everyone will understand
Love.
Probably it won't matter,
but either way,
what if it does?

Can you bet your life on it,
that it will not
ever happen?

Life is full of surprises,
taking a chance
could cost a lot.

But hey, it's up to you
but don't come to me
when life doesn't follow
your day-by-day plan.
When your little boy
whom you raised and believed in-
The boy you stupidly made dreams for-
comes to you with news,
don't say you never suspected.
Because you came to me,
saying even though it could never happen,
but you think he may
turn out to be gay.
But like you said,
It could never happen to you.

The Truth

Staring at my mother,
at my father and my brother,
I break down.
Tears don't come easy, but they come easy enough.
Seventeen years of lies,
I wasn't about to let another go by.
It hurt me, it hurt me a lot,
To admit to myself the truth.
They say you grow up when you realize who you are
But I used to know who I was,
I used to stand tall.
And now,
Now that I know the truth,
I've never felt so small.
Watching them cry, seeing their confusion,
I know it's a long road ahead.
No doubt the tears won't stop,
Fear will control our actions,
More lies will be spoken.
But maybe one day,
We'll all stand strong again, together with smiles.
