So Contemporary Fiction gives me a chance to read things I would have never thought about. We've now read two collections of short stories, one by Aimee Bender and another by Denis Johnson.
The Girl with the Flammable Skirt is a wonderful collection of fantasy/absurd stories about human connection and loneliness. At first I hated it, but I loved the last few stories, and they really tied the whole collection together.
Jesus' Son was a very interesting collection about a single man's life of drugs, sex, and violence. I really liked it, but I can't think of anything contemporary about it. We don't start discussing it until Monday, though, so I'm sure I'll find out then.
